RITE OF PASSAGE

There is a rite of passage that occurs at age 16 that begins the transition to adulthood. In order for parents to join their student in this transition, together they will study through a rite of passage series of their choice. Parents will then be encouraged and resourced to have their own ceremony when their student turns 16 in order to bless them and call them up into adulthood.

FAMILY ESSENTIALS
DURING HIGH SCHOOL YEARS

LIFE CONVERSATIONS  Parents should be intentional about conversation that prepare their teenager for life. Intentional conversations about their aptitude, wisdom, adulthood, finances, marriage, and relating to the opposite sex will prepare them for life on their own.
FAITH OPPORTUNITIES  Owning and initiating their own time alone with God, service, and finding their place in ministry is key. Serving in the Church, going on a mission trip, and exploring what and why they believe in God brings ownership, especially when they have permission to fail and learn.
BALANCED FREEDOM  A parent’s role in this phase of a teenager’s discipleship is to move from that of a manager (someone who gives direction and influence into every detail) to that of a coach (someone who gives direction and influence into the big picture). Wise parents navigate the balance to ensure their student is ready to be released to adulthood upon graduation.
